Joseph And The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat is the classic retelling of the one of the famous stories of the Bible’s book of Genesis. The show introduces us to the character of Joseph, whose father Jacob presents him with a gift in the form of the Technicolor Dreamcoat of the title. However, this sets in motion a series of negative events that prevent Joseph from enjoying the present as he should.

His brothers are jealous. They look at his new gift with envious eyes and devise a sinister plan of revenge. A world of slavery and forced travel await Joseph as they give him to the Ishmaelite, turning him into a slave. From here things go from bad to worse as Joseph changes hands and is forced to venture to Egypt, where he becomes yet another slave to the Egyptian Potiphar. It is a compelling story that has been delighting audiences for many years, with this famous Andrew Lloyd Webber production lovingly retold with some wonderful songs. These include “Close Every Door To Me”, “One More Angel In Heaven” and the famous “Any Dream Will Do”.

The story is a world famous one that is still showing at London’s Adelphi Theatre in a production that has seen many big names don the iconic coat. Many of us will remember Jason Donovan’s stint in the role in the early 1990s, a time when the song “Any Dream Will Do” was sung in every household up and down the country. This year, the role was cast back in the headlines will the BBC television series that took its name from the famous song. In it, a talent competition was held to find the new face of Joseph with Andrew Lloyd Webber standing as the judge. It led to the casting of Lee Mead in the role and boosted the popularity of the long running story.

When Mead recently finished in the role all eyes were firmly placed on the production as people eagerly awaited the announcement of his replacement, with the rumour mill suggesting names such as Gethin Jones, Zac Efron and Gareth Gates.

Eventually Gates was announced as the real deal, meaning that catching this great show in 2009 will involve witnessing Gareth Gates sing the classic songs and speak to famous lines. It will make for an unforgettable night out.
